Moving Day Countdown
It's never too early to begin planning for your move, and the best way to be prepared is to have a checklist or calendar with all of your necessities on it. This will help reduce the stress of your move.
Six Weeks Before Your Move:
1. Contact a mover to make arrangements for moving day. I am familiar with movers in the area, and would be happy to recommend a reliable professional to help with your move. Feel free to contact me at any time. 2. Begin packing items from your attic, cellar, basement and/or storage shed. 3. If you are relocating to a new city, find information on the schools, local attractions and the community.
Four Weeks Before Your Move:
1. Get a change of address form from the post office and fill out all necessary information. 2. Send your new address to magazines, charge accounts, cell phone providers, friends and relatives. 3. Contact utility, cable and other companies to discontinue the service at your current home, and reconnect at your new home. Remember to keep these services active during moving day. 4. Have a garage sale to sell unneeded items or arrange to donate them to charity. 5. Get copies of your child's school records.
One Week Before Your Move:
1. Return any books or video rentals to the store or library. 2. Drain gas and oil from power equipment (lawn mowers, snow blowers, etc.) 3. Give away plants not being moved. 4. Line up a babysitter for moving day. 5. Cancel your newspaper subscription.
A Few Days Before Your Move:
1. Defrost your refrigerator and freezer. 2. Pack a box of personal items that will be needed immediately at your new home, and personally move this box with you. 3. Pick up ice, beverages, plastic cups and snacks for moving day. 4. Make sure you have your cash, checkbook, credit cards and mobile phone handy in case you need them during the move. Do not pack these items.
Moving Day:
1. Remove all bedding and wrap mattresses in plastic or have them placed in special boxes. 2. Turn off water and lights and lock all doors and windows. 3. Hand in the keys to your old house, and make sure you have the keys to your new home.
